The downside of having no pigment

Saturday morning we went to the market in downtown St. George’s. Sometimes I wish I didn’t stick out like such a sore thumb. But I have to say that the local white people that I have seen look very weathered by the sun….. Even though I’m totally not dressed like a tourist, and I don’t act like a tourist, I get treated as though I’m a tourist…..it sucks, but I guess I’ve gotten better with my bartering skills.

Some lines I’ve heard while I’ve been out and about:
- Can I help you with your shopping?
- I like white women, I like white women (this was being sung behind me while in the produce section). I was really tempted to sing back “I like white men, I like white men” but its better to ignore this sort of thing.
- Let me make you my queen (no its okay, I’m not really one for titles).
- What’s your number baby, can I call you? (Sorry I don’t have a phone-this is a somewhat valid response down here).
- And of course there’s the full elevator eyes (that’s always appealing).

Going into town would be the perfect getaway, if I could just get away from the uncalled for solicitation. It almost makes me want to shave my head, and grow abscesses on my skin. Most of the time I just ignore it. Except once, I was pursued to the point where I switched my right handed ring to the left and said I was married, because I was actually being followed around the grocery store while I was shopping. The audacity….
